Interior Ministry declares January 8 as public holiday

The Interior Ministry, through Government issued an Executive Instrument designating Monday, January 8, 2024, as an additional public holiday in recognition of Constitution Day falling on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

The declaration extends the nationwide observance of Constitution Day in compliance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601).

This information was released to the public by the Ministry of Interior on January 2, 2024, through a press release signed by Interior Minister Ambrose Dery.

According to the press release, the general public is expected to observe Constitution Day across the country.

“The general public is hereby informed that Sunday, 7th January 2024 marks Constitution Day which is a Statutory Public Holiday.

However, in view of the fact that 7th January,2024 falls on a Sunday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, (Act 601) declared Monday, 8th January, 2024, as an additional Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”

The objective of the constitutional holiday is to commemorate Ghana’s fourth republican constitutional regime, which went into effect from January 7, 1993. This holiday also recognizes the nation’s efforts over the years to uphold the principles of the Fourth Republic.
