AFCON 2023 kicks off in Ivory Coast

The Super Eagles are in Group A with Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, and the hosts, Ivory Coast.

On paper, this group appears simple, as most would expect both Ivory Coast and Nigeria to easily advance to the knockout stages due to their superior players compared to the other two countries.

Seeking their third continental crown, the Elephants are hosting the competition for the second time. When their Golden Generation was coming to an end, they last won it in 2015. Max Gradel, an experienced player who was a member of the team that won the championship in 2015, is leading a young team. The likes of Sebastien Haller, Nicolas Pepe, Ibrahim Snagare, and Franck Kessie should make qualification easy for the hosts.

Nigeria has, however, frequently been charged with performing poorly in the competition. They should win since their strike force includes Victor Osimhen, the current African Player of the Year. They are aiming for a fourth continental championship and are participating in their 20th AFCON.

Equatorial Guinea might pose a challenge for the two favorite countries, having placed fourth in 2015. They have talented athletes that compete all around Europe.

It has to be seen if the Elephants can maintain that form into the upcoming AFCON opening against Guinea-Bissau, but at least their goal-scoring ability gives them cause for optimism.

Meanwhile, Ghana will kick their fate this edition of AFCON
