Founders’ Day: President Akufo-Addo calls for national unity and patriotism

In remembrance of the sacrifices made by Ghana’s predecessors, President Akufo-Addo has urged the people of Ghana to renew their commitment to democratic values. According to him, citizens need to help strengthen and fortify the nation’s democratic successes by strengthening independent institutions.

During a Founders’ Day broadcast, President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to exhibit a strong sense of national pride and exhibit tolerance towards differing opinions.

“We should continue to advocate national unity and social cohesion.  Our diversity is one of our greatest assets, and we should work to ensure that every Ghanaian feels included and valued.”

Also, President Akufo Addo pledged that his administration would hold a free, fair, and transparent election in December. He remarked that in order to keep Ghana peaceful before, during, and after the general election, the Vigilantism and Related Offenses Law will be vigorously implemented.

“The integrity of our electoral process is paramount, and we will take all necessary steps to secure it. The law against vigilantism will be strictly applied without fear or favour, ensuring that peace and order are maintained throughout the electoral period, enabling the Ghanaian people to make their choice free of intimidation and violence.“

President Akufo Addo further stated that in order to ensure peace, law and order, and national defense against foreign threats, particularly the terrorist insurgency that has swept the Sahelian region, the process of establishing robust, professional security forces will be accelerated.

In order to recognize the combined efforts of all individuals who supported Ghana’s independence movement, Parliament approved a bill in 2019 recognizing September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day and August 4 as Founders’ Day.
