2024 European Championship: Ronaldo assists Bruno Fernandes as Portugal defeats Turkey

Portugal defeated Turkey in Dortmund with ease, securing their spot in the round of 16 as group champions at Euro 2024.

Midway through the first half, Bernardo Silva of Manchester City opened the score, putting the opening effort past goalkeeper Altay Bayindir after a deflected cross from Nuno Mendes on the left found his path.

A terrible own goal by defender Samet Akaydin, who gave the ball back to Bayindir, who was incapable to stop it from slipping into his own net, doubled Portugal’s lead.

That put an end to the exuberant Turkish shouting that had begun with hundreds of supporters with flags after they moved from the city center to the stadium.

Portugal’s audience was smaller but still outstanding, and they rejoiced as their team performed with poise and flow.

Before an hour had gone by, Cristiano Ronaldo selflessly set up Bruno Fernandes for a tap-in to make it 3-0, securing the victory for his team.

The 2016 winners will play Group F opponents Georgia on Wednesday with the knowledge that their task in the group stages is finished, while Turkey may still qualify when they face the Czech Republic in Hamburg.
